| Saturday, June 8th, began just like any other day for the Members at Arcadia Volunteer Fire Company. The second demolition derby of the season was to be held today, so volunteers were busy setting up for the event. During the preparation before hand, a member of the community approached Chief Scott Boose with an odd request. The citizen owned several peacocks, and noticed this morning that one was stuck several feet up in a tree. The concerned citizen had no way of removing the bird from the tree, which she believed had been stuck there over night. She told the rescue personnel that the bird has a habit of flying high into the tree at night to sleep, but that this time he got entangled by his feathers. Two members from Arcadia Volunteers, Bill Hare and Matthew Burgan, responded to the citizens request for help. On arrival at the citizens home, the members did in fact find a peacock stuck, upside down in the tree, about 40 feet in the air. The members and the home owner worked hand in hand to secure a tag line to the large-diameter branch, and then used a tractor to break the branch, lowering the height of the bird to a workable height. Once lowered, the limb that the bird was entangled in was cut, and the peacock and the limb were carried safely down the ladder. Once on the ground, the bird was disentangled from the limb, and set free. The bird was uninjured, and before the fire department could leave, was moving happily about the property. The citizens, who were so grateful for the rescue, made a generous contribution to the fire company, and even threw in a few famous peacock feathers. |
