| In the late evening hours on Wednesday, November 12th, units in Manchester, Carroll County were alerted for a brush fire. While responding, units from Manchester VFD noticed an orange glow and immediately called for additional assistance from neighboring fire companies. The fire, encompassing several hundred square feet, was located deep in the woods behind a farm on Bachman Valley Road. Access into the woods was made difficult by the brush, and access to the woods was difficult due to distance and terrain. Because of this, command requested several additional engines, in addition to the brush units operating on the scene. Shortly after, an ATV was requested. Arcadia Volunteers were then requested to bring their ATV as well as Brush 436, a 1976 Jeep CJ5 that is capable of getting deep into wooded areas with little problem. The units responded from Arcadia to assist on the fire. The Jeep and the ATV both performed well, getting into the woods to provide water where previously only firefighters on foot with Indian Tanks were able to reach. As the incident evolved, hoselines were stretched into the woods to assist in controlling the fire. Engine 434, a smaller 4WD engine, was also called to assist in shuttling water from the source to the brush units in the woods. Units from Arcadia operated on the brush fire for nearly 3 hours to help contain the spread. |
