By President Scott Boose
January 28, 2017

At 0855 Hrs this morning a citizen stopped at the station asking for help to get a horse up that had injured herself while giving birth. We immediately contacted the Captain at station 17 by phone to describe the situation since they are the advanced tactical rescue team for Baltimore County. After the phone consult it was decided to have units dispatched for a horse rescue. Our engine 431 along with the units from the advanced tactical rescue team at station 17 was dispatched. Our engine 431 arrived first and evaluated the scene while awaiting the USAR Team from station 17. After the USAR team arrived units decided to request assistance from the tactical rescue team out of Harford County for their horse sling. While waiting for the sling to arrive units on scene constructed a beam above the horse and lifting system while consulting with a Veterinarian on scene to use in conjunction with the horse sling. After the sling arrived units were able to get the horse up to its feet and the Vet was able to better examine the horse only to find out that the horse had a fractured pelvis and could not be saved. However the newborn foal was doing fine and the farm had already received a mare from Kentucky to nurse the new foal. All units on scene worked together for several hours and units all cleared the scene around 1 pm. While units were on the scene our 2nd engine 432 also responded to a brush fire threatening a structure in Hampstead.
