Effective on October 1st, several new laws will go into effect in the state of Maryland. With gun control and regulation laws taking a majority of the spotlight, some of the other new laws have been overlooked. The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration would like to remind drivers that the new laws that affect drivers in the state focus on seat belts and cell phone usage behind the wheel. For example, using a cell phone while a vehicle is in motion is now considered to be a primary offense, which means that a driver can now be stopped solely for using a cell phone, and brings a price tag of up to $160. Also new this year, passengers in the back seat are now required to be belted. Unbelted backseat passengers can be issued citations for up to $83.
