| Arcadia Volunteer Fire Company is proud to announce its partnership with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary for the instruction of a Maryland Boating Safety Course. "Arcadia Volunteers greatly appreciates the work that the Coast Guard Auxiliary does when it comes to the instruction of boating safety", said Scott Boose, Chief of the Arcadia Volunteer Fire Company, who continued to explain, "We truly support the instruction of Boating Safety, especially with as close as we are to the Prettyboy Reservoir." Arcadia is also in close proximity to the Chesapeake Bay, a favorite amongst hundreds of thousands of boating enthusiasts from all over the state and surrounding regions. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources reported that there were 186 boating accidents in 2011, higher than the past decade's average of 164 per year. Of those 186 accidents, 156 resulted in injury, while 24 of them were fatal. All of the accidents in 2011 have come with a steep price tag, almost $1.4 million in damages. The USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 054-22-07 will be presenting the Maryland Boating Safety Course at the Arcadia Volunteer Fire Company. This is a required class for anyone born after July 1, 1972, and participants will be issued their certificate on the day they attend, upon successful completion of the class. Registrants pay $20 for the program, with half of the proceeds directly benefiting the Arcadia Volunteer Fire Company. The class will be offered twice, April 14th and April 21st. Classes begin at 9:00am in the meeting room of the fire station, and are expected to be approximately 4 hours long with a written exam at the end. The Flotilla prefers attendants to preregister, but walk-ins will be accepted if space permits. To preregister, participants should contact Abe Spergel, USCG Auxiliary, at 443-504- 3880 or email at ais1234@gmail.com. |
