Upperco Holds, in station, Silo Rescue Equipment Training
By Fire Captain Scott Timberman
September 8, 2025
On the evening of Monday Sept. 8, 2025 members from Sta. 85 took a field trip to Lippy Brothers Farms to get a tour of their facilities and conduct training on the specialty equipment carried should a silo emergency occur. After the tour members climbed a ladder into a truck full of grain to get hands on experience with this life saving equipment. Fire Captain Timberman & Fire Lieutenant Reed conducted a brief refresher course of what is carried, how the equipment functions, and the sequence of steps for quick deployment and removal of grain from a person trapped inside a silo. Crew members conducted several scenarios, switching roles along the way to get intimately familiar with all aspects of performing an operation. Crews were on scene for just over 2 hours, learned alot, and even had some fun digging themselves down into the grain and being "rescued."
