RESCUE IN BORING

By Matthew Burgan
March 16, 2013

Shortly after 9:30 PM on Friday night, the Medic unit from Arcadia Volunteers was alerted with other units from Baltimore County, to the report of a vehicle collision with rollover on Byerly Road, in Boring, across the street from the home of a member from Arcadia. While responding to the scene, the medic crew was advised that there was a victim still trapped inside of the vehicle, and a rescue assignment including a squad, truck, EMS Supervisor, and Battalion Chief, was added to the job. Units arrived on scene and advised that there was a single vehicle on it's roof, approximately 30 yards into a field. Engine 432 responded with additional personnel to support operations on scene. Medic 435 prepared to receive the patient while crews from Boring, as well as neighboring Reisterstown and Glyndon Volunteers, effected the extrication of the victim from the automobile, where he was pinned upside down in the drivers seat. The victim was determined to be in serious condition, and a request was placed for aviation to airlift the patient to a trauma center in Baltimore. Maryland State Police Aviation Command responded and landed in a field nearby, at a landing site established by Engine 56 of the BCoFD. Following a complicated extrication, the vehicle was removed from around the patient, and the patient was extracted. The patient was then stabilized in the medic unit and transported a short distance to the landing site, where he was then transferred to the waiting medevac for transport to the trauma center. BCoPD is still investigating the incident, and whether or not alcohol was a factor. The victim was transported to a trauma center in Baltimore in serious but stable condition.

Units: Medic 435, Engine 432, Engine 424, Squad 414, Truck 404, Engine 56, EMS 5, Battalion Chief.
