UPPERCO VFC LOSES A SECOND LIFE MEMBER

The Upperco Vol Fire Co. is sad to announce the passing of Life Member John D. Rill. John joined the Arcadia Vol. Fire Co. in 1948 and continued to serve the volunteer fire service faithfully for 69 years.

John D. Rill, 100, of Finksburg, MD, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Golden Crest Assisted Living in Hampstead, MD. Born on March 29, 1917, in Hampstead, he was the son of the late Albert and Laura Rill. He was the husband of the late Ella Peregoy Rill.

John was a volunteer with the Arcadia Volunteer Fire Company (now known as Upperco Volunteer Fire Company) for 69 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 200 Hampstead and was also a faithful member of Wesley United Methodist Church. John was a U.S. Army veteran and proudly served his country during World War II.

Surviving him are his children: Roxanne Elmo and fiancé William of York, PA, Roger Rill and wife Shirley of Hampstead, MD, Dennis Rill and wife Amy of Stewartstown, PA, Douglas Rill and wife Cheryl of Upperco, MD, 12 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 12 great- great grandchildren, siblings: Freida Unger, Vernice Hetrick, and Virginia Mays.

He was predeceased by a daughter: Eileen Shamer.

The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, September 6, from 3-5 and 7-9 pm at ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A. 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester, MD 21102, and on Thursday, September 7, from 10 - 11 am at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3239 Carrollton Rd, Hampstead, MD 21074, where a funeral service will be held at 11 am. Interment to follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church of Hampstead, MD, or the Upperco Volunteer Fire Company.
